How to apply adaptskin

Step One – Wash

Wash skin vigorously using a mild soap with no perfumes, additives, or antibacterial agents. Inspect skin for any new sores, abrasions, or rashes. Concentrate cleaning in these areas.

Step Two – Dry

Dry skin thoroughly and massage in adaptskin. Condition your limb with adaptskin at least twice daily: once before you don your prosthesis and again at the end of the day, after you have washed your residual limb. For excessively irritated and fragile skin, adaptskin should be applied several times per day. Do not wear your prosthesis, liners, or socks with wet or damp skin.

Step Three – Liner

Always start the day with a clean silicone liner, gel liner, or sock. Socks and liners should be washed with a gentle laundry detergent. Be sure there is a thorough rinse period with clean warm water. Wash liners at night to allow for adequate drying time. Wall of socket can also be cleansed with rubbing alcohol.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Adaptskin50: a medium viscosity for more general applications and daily use. Adaptskin50 uses cyclomethicone to enhance the skin's barrier protection and leave a lighter, silky-smooth feel when applied.

Adaptskin90: a thicker and designed for areas of localized skin damage/irritation. Adaptskin90 has a lipid-rich formulation which provides extended coverage and protection for areas of high abrasion and stress.

Some amputees use both Adaptskin 50 and 90. In conversations with many amputees, we find that they generally prefer using one over the other. It comes down to personal preference, but can also vary based on the type of prosthesis you wear, where you live, and your activity level.

  • We find with regular use, Adaptskin will last most amputees approximately 6 to 8 months.

  • No, most silicone liner manufactures cast the silicone liner in a fabric sleeve, leaving no adhesive between the fabric and silicone; therefore, the theory that petrolatum-based products degrades silicone liners is unfounded.

Additionally, our product is completely compatible with oil based gel liners since we use the same base products as the liners.  Because of this, there is an added benefit in that Adaptskin keeps the liner from drying out, extending your liner’s life.

  • Yes, all ingredients used in making Adaptskin have been extensively clinically tested or recognized as FDA safe for cosmetic use. Adaptskin has been used daily by amputees for over sixteen years and was widely tested prior to being introduced to the market. There has never been any reported case of Adaptskin causing patient harm or irritation of any kind.
